Star Cup

August 2019

Drinking a cup of coffee, tea or milk is many people’s favorite morning routine. However, cleaning the cup might not be so much. It is hard to justify using a dishwasher to clean just a cup and saucer, and the water residue from a quick wash often leaves ugly stains and room for bacteria growth. Starcup is a quick dry cup that is comfortable to hold, easy to clean, and most importantly, elegant looking.

Look down and see a star.

The overall shape of the cup and saucer is inspired by faceted gemstones. I used hexagonal antiprisms as bases, and deformed them to create the faceted look. The top view of the cup looks like a star, which is how it got the name “Starcup”

The handle of Starcup is designed to create a sense of integration with the body. The user can hold the handle with one index finger and balance it with the middle finger, which makes it easy to hold.

Resting on the handle, the cup can be placed upside down, which forms a 45°angle with the table. The water residue can easily flow out of the cup, making it easy to dry.
